Many areas remain committed to making the sport affordable and fun for families. And now the weather is no longer a controlling factor as many areas have developed snowmaking and grooming techniques that will assure its patrons of great skiing even if mother nature doesn’t want to cooperate.

2ndhome® Journal selected several medium sized ski areas in the northeast, that live up to the promise of a great time for all. Full enjoyment while on the mountain, great accommodations and permanent second home spots, shopping and after-hours entertainment are all in ready supply at reasonable rates.

Maine’s Shawnee Peak, in Bridgton is celebrating its 70th year and is the longest running ski area in Maine. “We are the original ski and snowboard mountain,” says Melissa Rock, Marketing Director. The Peak is Maine’s largest family-owned ski mountain and is home to the most night skiing in New England, with the largest lit terrain park/halfpipe combo along with 98 percent snowmaking coverage.

“Since purchasing Shawnee Peak in 1994, Chet Homer, a Kennebunk businessman, has focused on fine tuning the mountain’s infrastructure by adding lifts, lights and trails, improving snowmaking, buying a fleet of new Pisten Bully groomers, and adding innovative family pricing packages, says Rock. Homer has kept costs down and offers customers value for their Shawnee experience, which has encouraged continued family participation in the sport.

“Located just two hours from Boston,” says Rock, “the Peak offers more than 40 trails, four gladed areas of all ability levels, two terrain parks – including the NEW 12’ 20’ Monster Wall, a 400-foot halfpipe, five lifts, with an unprecedented big-mountain experience combined with small-mountain value.” The Peak boasts Maine’s Largest and Best Kept Lit Halfpipe, at more than 400 feet long and 44 feet lip to lip. Freestyle skiers, snowboarders and snowbladers play day and night in the Pipe and Park, consistently and expertly maintained with Shawnee Peak’s Pisten Park Bully.

And located slopeside, just a short slide from the base lodge, the Peak offers brand new two-bedroom luxury condos available for rent and sale.

The mountain overlooks scenic Moose Pond, and offers great views of New Hampshire’s Mount Washington and the Presidential Range to the west, and the Lakes Region of western Maine to the east. The Peak’s gladed terrain allows intermediate skiers to experience the thrill and beauty of skiing among the trees of Shawnee’s Sherwood Forest area or graduate to the advanced and expert terrain in the famous gladed areas off the mountain’s East Side.

Rock pointed out some new changes at the Peak. There is an environmentally oriented snowmaking pump, making more snow, using less energy! Also there is the improved “Happiness Is” trail – a popular beginner slope, widened by 75 feet.

“Plus there is value at The Peak,” says Rock. Everyday there is a special ski offering…some samples are, Monday – Carload Dayz: Arrive before 11 a.m. and everyone in your vehicle skis ‘til 9 p.m. for just $64 per vehicle; or Wednesday – Family Day: buy an adult ticket and get a junior ticket for just $5 more, one adult and one junior, $39; or Saturday – Saturday Night Fever: ski 7 to 10 p.m. for just $12. Rentals, $13; or Sunday – Ski Sunday Afternoon (noon to 4:30 p.m.) just $23. Add rentals, $21.

For beginner skiers and families with young children, the beginner surface lift is just $10 — and can be credited toward a full-price lift ticket later in the day. Children five and under ski free anytime at the Peak when accompanied by a paying adult. “There is also the nationally-acclaimed SKIwee program for ages four to five, says Rock, with other children’s programs that include the Junior Mountaineers and the MiniRiders snowboarding program for ages 7 to 12.”

The Mountain also has the Peak-A-Boo Day Care Center which offers care for children ages three months to six years. For events and vacation information, (207) 647-8444 or go to http://www.shawneepeak.com.

Burke Mountain in Vermont is renowned for its breathtaking views and ski racing heritage. Says David Gwatkin, Marketing Director, “Burke Mountain, located in the village of East Burke, is the best kept skiing secret in the Northeast. The area is home to Burke Mountain Academy, the preeminent ski academy in the country with 40 Olympians to its credit. And the Mountain features sweeping, winding trails, an average of 248 inches of snowfall each year, 45 trails and glades on 250 acres of terrain, and a vertical drop of 2,011 feet (among the elite eight in Vermont with more than 2,000).”

There have been major upgrades to its snowmaking system that provide 80 percent coverage for novice, intermediate, and expert trails. Burke also has four terrain parks to keep the freestylists in your family busy all day long.

“The Mountain offers the Snowsports Learning Center, the ski school which introduced the revolutionary ‘carved turn’”, adds Gwatkin. There is also the Tamarack Grill restaurant and bar, a retail shop, and a cafe. The Grill is known locally for superb food and offers an extensive wine list and a variety of Vermont brews, including its very own Tamarack and Bear Den Ales. The Mid-Burke Lodge, featuring the Bear Den Lounge, captures the essence of the character of Burke Mountain, with its field stone fireplace, exposed wooden beams, solid pine tables and skis from days gone by displayed on its walls.

Also, Burke Mountain “offers a variety of season-long programs for children and aspiring ski racers,” says Gwatkin. “The Snowsports Learning Center features its Burkie Explorers and Freestyle programs for children from ages four to 12. These programs are available to both skiers and snowboarders. Burke Mountain also partners with Burke Mountain Academy to offer its Junior Race Program, available to racers in the J3 to J7 classes. Young racers train and race throughout the season under the tutelage of BMA’s world-class coaches, some of whom are former Olympic and US National Team members.”

Beyond the resort, families can partake in ice-fishing on one of the region’s magnificent lakes, ice skating on a secluded pond, sledding, snowmobiling, snow shoeing, dog-sledding or take a ride in a horse-drawn sleigh.

And there is summer time too on the mountain. Gwatkin mentioned that the “area offers a bevy of activities for the outdoor enthusiast. Over a third of the state’s ponds and lakes are in Northeast Kingdom, Vermont’s expansive, least populated region, offering wonderful paddling and angling experiences. The village of East Burke is home to the Kingdom Trails, an internationally acclaimed network of over 150 miles of mountain biking trails stitched across the area’s pastoral landscape. For those interested in viewing wildlife either by boat or on foot, seeing loon, moose, deer, wild turkeys, ruffed grouse, peregrine falcons, and the cagey red fox is hardly uncommon.”

Burke Mountain’s parent company, the Ginn Company, based in Celebration, FL, is currently in the planning stages for a development that will include condominiums, single-family homes and a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course. Give a close look at http://www.skiburke.com

Ski Butternut, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts is described by SKI Magazine as “a true family mountain” and “family gem”, that offers skiers and snowboarders from across the northeastern United States an affordable, fun-filled winter sports experience. With 1,000 feet of vertical, Ski Butternut’s 110-skiable-acres of slopes and trails provide snow-sport enthusiasts of all abilities a unique and memorable winter experience. “And thanks to a newly upgraded snowmaking system,” says Matt Sawyer, Marketing Director, “the mountain can now pump out 200 percent more snow this winter than in previous years, as long as Mother Nature cooperates!”

The mountain, located in the beautiful Berkshire mountains of southwestern Massachusetts, is a relatively short drive, less than four hours from Philadelphia or New York City, with directions provided on Ski Butternut’s informative website http://www.SkiButternut.com.

“Ski Butternut affords skiers and snowboarders of all abilities a diverse sampling of terrain,” says Sawyer. “Our trails include an easy yet fun-filled beginner trail which winds from top to bottom through virgin forests of Pine, Hemlock, Beech and Maple.”

Unlike other mountains located much farther north, all trails safely funnel back to the base area, so families can reconnect and share the winter fun more easily! At the mountain’s base are two modern base lodges and a separate but easily accessible learn-to-ski area featuring gentle first-timer and beginner slopes with their own easy-to-learn-and-use chairlifts, and a gentle Wonder Carpet ride for the very youngest skier or snowboarder!

“Elsewhere on our mountain,” adds Sawyer, “sliders will find a variety of wider, intermediate trails, perfect for relaxed cruising and linking long, carved turns. Other skiers and snowboarders wanting a bit more of a wild ride, will enjoy Ski Butternut’s two terrain parks. The more advanced park offers a selection of challenging “hits” and jumps, scattered across and down our “Twist” and “Westway” expert trails. For those just learning terrain park features, a smaller version is located in Ski Butternut’s beginner area. “

In keeping skiing and snowboarding costs affordable, Butternut offers savings and great value. For instance, season passes, if purchased by November 30th, are only $229 for adults, ages 14 to 65; $179 for juniors, ages seven to 13; and just $69 for kids, six-years and under. After that, season prices revert to their regular rates ($279 for adults, $209 for juniors and just $79 for kids).

“If you are not ready to commit to season passes,” says Sawyer, “consider purchasing Ski Butternut’s Lift-Ticket-3-Packs. These blocks of three daily lift vouchers can be used interchangeably, individually or together…and if purchased by December 20, will save you $10 per ticket! And skiers and snowboarders who don’t yet have their own gear, can rent complete sets of equipment for the season for just $99 for kids and juniors, and only $139 for anyone over the age of 14!”

You can also save by skiing Monday through Thursday, when lift tickets are just $20 ($20 tickets are not valid during holiday periods). Also there are First-Timer and All-Mountain packages, which include lift, lesson and rentals. Economical ski and stay packages are also available at more than 30 country inns, bed and breakfasts and motels near the mountain, starting at just $45 per person per day! “This price includes both your lodging and your daily lift ticket,” adds Sawyer.

The Mountain has more than 200 qualified ski, snowboard and adaptive instructors under the guidance of Einar Aas, director for the past 44 years.

Many youngsters learn, practice and improve their skills best through Ski Butternut’s SKIwee and miniRIDER learning programs. These special programs, which provide young skiers and snowboarders a lift ticket, lesson and snacks for the day, can be extended for five days to maximize savings.

So wherever you are in the northeast, there is plenty of quality, family snow sport fun without needing a hefty bank account to do it. Beautiful, exciting and rewarding the winter mountain experience awaits you.

  • The Stig Versus The BMW?

The Stig is the unidentified test driver of vehicles on the favourite BBC Sunday night programme, Top Gear. So far unbeaten, The Stig’s laptimes are breathtaking.

However, he came very close to being beaten last Sunday by Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton performed a lap in 1 minute 44.6 seconds in wet, oily conditions. This came in at a mere .2 of a second behind The Stigs 1 minute and 44.4. And his performance was in dry conditions.

Lewis Hamilton has thrown down the gauntlet to The Stig with a challenge for both drivers to compete in the same weather conditions.

Fans of Top Gear will undoubtedly have joined the debate over the true identity of The Stig. William Hill bookmakers have stunt driver Russ Swift as the hot favourite at odds of 2/1 with Damon Hill at 4/1. Ben Collins is a little known racer who has appeared on Top Gear as part of a parachuting stunt and this led to speculation over whether or not he was the secret Stig. However, bookies surmise that at just over 6′ tall, Collins does not fit the bill.

Maybe they are all wrong. Personally, I think The Stig is a woman. I mean, you only have to look at the driving skills coupled with the fact that there is a definite lack of accidents. It’s well known that women have far fewer accidents than men. Maybe its Sandy Togsvig or Dame Judi Dench? Well, anything is possible. Maybe that’s why they won’t reveal The Stig’s identity because it would dispel all myths about women drivers!

The Stig has set some of his best lap times in BMW’s. With an amazingly rapid 1 minute 26 seconds in the BMW Z4M, closely followed by 1 minute 28 seconds in a BMW M3 CSL, this has to be one of his favourite cars. With its smooth handling, precision cornering and ultimate power, all the BMW’s tested by The Stig have come in at under 1 minute and 32 seconds per lap.

Viewers of this week’s Top Gear would also have been among the first to witness the test drive of a new BMW currently being developed. This BMW is unique in the fact that on board computers can ‘learn’ a route and then drive itself. After only one drive around the track by presenter Jeremy Clarkson, the car was able to memorize the route and then take over.

Looking petrified, Clarkson let go of the wheel, removed his feet from the pedals and shrieked as the BMW took off, braking at the last minute on bends. The BMW completed the lap leaving Clarkson in one piece. However, the general feeling was that it would be extremely difficult to trust this on the road. Not due to any problem with the car but simply human nature to want to be in control of such power.

So, Top Gear team, make the Hamilton challenge more interesting. Let’s see The Stig take on Lewis Hamilton and a woman driver, in dry conditions, in a BMW.

  • A Look at the Several Rock Climbing Gear Available

There are several rock climbing gear available for rock climbing which is must to be carried by all rock climbers to keep themselves safe while climbing.

A Climbing Shoe is the most useful rock climbing gear used. Improved designs in these shoes have made it possible for climbers to reach destinations that were not possible earlier. The existing climbing shoes have smooth and rubber soles that can effectively protect the foot from shocks, sharp edges and provide appropriate friction.

A modern climbing rope is a key piece of safety equipment mainly needed for rock climbing and is an important rock climbing gear.

A D-shaped carabineer is used always in climbing. This consists of aluminum rings that can be opened with the help of a gate that is operated with the help of a spring. Normally, the spring grips the gate closed, but the gate can be opened to admit a rope.

A carabineer is considered to be safe till the gate is opened. To increase the security, 2 carabineers can be used in tandem with their gates reversed. It is not at all possible that some factor would make both the gates to open simultaneously.

Tubular nylon webbing is another rock climbing gear used often in climbing. It is made of nylon material woven into a flat tube an inch across. This webbing has very high strength. Unlike the climbing rope, it does not stretch under tension. Nylon webbing is the most frequently used tied into a loop. It can be easily cut to any preferred length. The ends are seasoned with heat to prevent fraying.

Loops of webbing sewn together at the factory also known as Pre sewn webbing is a favorite among climbers. Pre-sewn webbings though convenient are costlier than the custom-tied loops, which are cheaper and adjustable.

A climbing harness attaches the climber to the rope. This harness has a nylon belt, which has a big width and is strong. It also has loops for the thighs.

When such a harness is used to support the climber, most of the body weight is concentrated on the legs, rather than the climber’s waist, making it comfortable to hang in. Many variations is available in harness, a necessary rock climbing gear. More costly harnesses have more padding. The diameter of the leg loops can also be adjusted.

The belayer stops climbers who fall. This is quite difficult without the aid of the belay device, which is an object able of stop the rope or passing it through smoothly. Belay devices are of different varieties that are all quite simple and safe for use.

    .

A figure-eight belay device has two metal rings about an inch in diameter joined in the shape of an 8. A loop of rope is passed through one of the rings, then around and under the other ring.

The ring without the rope is connected to the belayer’s harness with a locking carabineer. When tightly secured, the rope bends up to 490-degree angle in the few inches of space, making it almost impossible to move.

  • Making the Most of Your Fuel Dollars

Fuel prices are fluctuating, but there is no doubt that the days of crude oil are on the decline, which means higher prices over time. So how can we conserve gas and make the most of our fuel dollars? According to HowToAdvice.com, here are 30 ways to start.

    WARMING UP YOUR VEHICLE

    1. Avoid prolonged warming up of engine, even on cold mornings – 30 to 45 seconds is plenty of time.

    2. Be sure the automatic choke is disengaged after engine warm up… chokes often get stuck, resulting in bad gas/air mixture.

    3. Don’t start and stop engine needlessly. Idling your engine for one minute consumes the gas amount equivalent to when you start the engine.

    4. Avoid “revving” the engine, especially just before you switch the engine off; this wastes fuel needlessly and washes oil down from the inside cylinder walls, owing to loss of oil pressure.

    5. Eliminate jackrabbit starts. Accelerate slowly when starting from dead stop. Don’t push pedal down more than 1/4 of the total foot travel. This allows carburetor to function at peak efficiency.

    HOW TO BUY GASOLINE

    6. Buy gasoline during coolest time of day – early morning or late evening is best. During these times gasoline is densest. Keep in mind – gas pumps measure volumes of gasoline, not densities of fuel concentration. You are charged according to “volume of measurement”.

    7. Choose type and brand of gasoline carefully. Certain brands provide you with greater economy because of better quality. Use the brands which “seem” most beneficial.

    8. Avoid filling gas tank to top. Overfilling results in sloshing over and out of tank. Never fill gas tank past the first “click” of fuel nozzle, if nozzle is automatic.

    HOW TO DRIVE ECONOMICALLY

    9. Exceeding 40 mph forces your auto to overcome tremendous wind resistance.

    10. Never exceed legal speed limit. Primarily they are set for your traveling safety, however better gas efficiency also occurs. Traveling at 55 mph give you up to 21% better mileage when compared to former legal speed limits of 65 mph and 70 mph.

    11. Traveling at fast rates in low gears can consume up to 45% more fuel than is needed.

    12. Manual shift driven cars allow you to change to highest gear as soon as possible, thereby letting you save gas if you “nurse it along”. However, if you cause the engine to “bog down”, premature wearing of engine parts occurs.

    13. Keep windows closed when traveling at highway speeds. Open windows cause air drag, reducing your mileage by 10%.

    14. Drive steadily. Slowing down or speeding up wastes fuel. Also avoid tailgating – the driver in front of you is unpredictable. Not only is it unsafe, but if affects your economy, if he slows down unexpectedly.

15.Think ahead when approaching hills. If you accelerate, do it before you reach the hill, not while you’re on it.

    GENERAL ADVICE

    16. Do not rest left foot on floor board pedals while driving. The slightest pressure puts “mechanical drag” on components, wearing them down prematurely. This “dragging” also demands additional fuel usage.

    17. Avoid rough roads whenever possible, because dirt or gravel rob you of up to 30% of your gas mileage.

    18. Use alternate roads when safer, shorter, straighter. Compare traveling distance differences – remember that corners, curves and lane jumping requires extra gas. The shortest distance between two points is always straight.

    19. Stoplights are usually timed for your motoring advantage. By traveling steadily at the legal speed limit you boost your chances of having the “green light” all the way.

    20. Automatic transmissions should be allowed to cool down when your car is idling at a standstill, e.g. railroad crossings, long traffic lights, etc. Place gear into neutral position. This reduces transmission strain and allows transmission to cool.

    21. Park car so that you can later begin to travel in forward gear; avoid reverse gear maneuvers to save gas.

    22. Regular tune-ups ensure best economy; check owner’s manual for recommended maintenance intervals. Special attention should be given to maintaining clean air filters… diminished airflow increases gas waste.

    23. Inspect suspension and chassis parts for occasional misalignment. Bent wheels, axles, bad shocks, broken springs, etc. create engine drag and are unsafe at high traveling speeds.

    24. Remove snow tires during good weather seasons; traveling on deep tire tread really robs fuel!

    25. Inflate all tires to maximum limit. Each tire should be periodically spun, balanced and checked for out-of-round. When shopping for new tires, get large diameter tires for rear wheels. Radial designs are the recognized fuel-savers; check manufacturer’s specifications for maximum tire pressures.

    26. Remove vinyl tops – they cause air drag. Rough surfaces disturb otherwise smooth air flow around a car’s body. Bear in mind when buying new cars that a fancy sun roof helps disturb smooth air flow (and mileage).

    27. Auto air conditioners can reduce fuel economy by 10% to 20%. Heater fan, power windows and seats increase engine load; the more load on your engine, the less miles per gallon.

    28. Remove excess weight from trunk or inside of car – extra tires, back seats, and unnecessary heavy parts. Extra weight reduces mileage, especially when driving up inclines.

    29. Car pools reduce travel monotony and gas expense – all riders chip in to help you buy. Conversation helps to keep the driver alert. Pooling also reduces traffic congestion, gives the driver easier maneuverability and greater “steady speed” economy. For best results, distribute passenger weight evenly throughout car.

    30. During cold weather watch for icicles frozen to car frame. Up to 100 lbs. can be quickly accumulated! Unremoved snow and ice cause tremendous wind resistance. Warm water thrown on (or hosed on) will eliminate it fast.

    EXTRA TIPS

Install pressure regulator valve (sold in auto parts stores)… Use graphite motor oil… Beware of oil additives, regardless of advertising claims… Add Marvel Mystery Oil into gas fill-ups… Investigate fuel/water injection methods and products… combine short errands into one trip… Use special gas additives to prevent winter freezing of gas lines… convert your V8 engine over to a V4 – no special kits needed!!!

  • Get Radiohead Tickets for the Concert of the Year!

It’s no wonder people are dying for Radiohead tickets! The band deserves such fans! Transformed from their garage-band sound of three guitars in their debut single, “Creep”, this band has come out with their newest album, “2007’s In Rainbows.”

    All About The Band

Get two parts Lovelesss, two parts Pink Floyd, one part Bossanova with a generous dose of U2’s early vehemence and combine them. You get Radiohead! This is a band that has songs marked with anguish ridden lyrics and music that’s got a tinge of electronics and advanced styles.

It was 1993 when Radiohead debuted with their album “Pablo Honey.” One of its singles, “Creep” was a rock anthem and gained international acclaim. With this surprising success, critics were all geared up to label Radiohead as a one-hit wonder band. However, they were rendered speechless when the band’s second album titled “The Bends” was released in 1995. It received amazing reviews in native Britain.

Although some remained unmoved by the relatively placid songs of “The bends”, there were many takers for its unique and diverse sound. Here was a newly formed British band that owed less to the Sex Pistols and Beatles and more to Pink Floyd.

Radiohead’s next release was “OK Computer.” This was a post-punk, art-progressive-rock album with an electro-mix of intricate graphics, real emotions, and lyrics ridden with anguish. It became one of the most appreciated albums of the ‘90s. Even the critics smiled!

Since the release of this electro-mix album, touring became a crucial part of the band’s production process. The band started experimenting with new sonic textures. “Paranoid Android” was one such song that reflected the changed choice of the band since they first performed. It was the first single of “OK Computer.” This six and half minute track managed to find the third position in UK Charts.

Radiohead’s fourth album “Kid A” was released in October 2000. It rose to a top position in US Album Charts! This album silenced the critics and let the band emerge as a perfectionist. In June, 2001, Radiohead released the album “Amnesiac.” It contained songs that were recorded during the making of “Kid A” album, including the number “Knives Out.” Now, it seemed that this band left Pink Floyd far behind and started on a new musical note parallel to Can or Sigur Ros.

The year 2003 saw the release of “Hail To The Thief” by Radiohead. It was a mature and bold album with electronic theatrics and epic prog-rock. The noteworthy feature of this album was the absence of anguish ridden lyrics! Instead, the songs reflected complex metaphor as well as layered texture to express thoughts.

This band likes to experiment! And every time they embark on a new musical journey, they are greeted with applause from fans. One of the specialties of this band is that they are more into improving themselves with every album, rather than trying to dominate the rock world.

Perhaps that’s why each album of Radiohead speaks for itself in a new way. There’s no competition; only music from the heart!

Radiohead tickets have become almost a challenge to get! Want them? Dial a number!

  • Where can i get Top Gear?

I do a lot of torrent downloading (i’ll pass on your sermon for morality / legality ) for the majority of films in my personal collection but am at a loss right now because I actually want to go out and pay for a DVD set.
My favorite show on television is Top Gear, and I’d like to find a box set with all 13 seasons.. but I just can’t. If you don’t mind the wait, all seasons can be acquired by download if you’ve got a big enough monitor and more importantly, a large hard drive. At 70 Gigabytes, it’s a serious chunk of anyone’s hard disk.

So help me out fellow net-nutters, can a box set be found anywhere?
