• Gifts For The Fly Fishermen This Holiday Season: A Guide For Those Who Know Nothing About Fishing

It seems that just about everyone has one of them in their life-a fisherman that may leave you feeling completely clueless when it comes to choosing a gift for the holiday season. My dad is fanatical about fishing. When I was a kid he would wake me in the freezing dawn hours and set me up with a fishing pole and a box of fishing flies where I would stand for hours. I suppose I never really understood what it was that lit his passion for fishing.

This is same reason I never really know what to get him for the holidays. Perhaps like the fisherman in your life, he never gave me a clear answer about what he might really want. This year, I decided to break into the fisherman psyche and find out from fishermen themselves about best-bet gifts for the holiday season.

    Gift certificates for fishing flies
The gift certificate may not look as intriguing under the tree as a big brightly-wrapped present, but guys and gals into fishing are very particular about their fishing flies and say they prefer to pick out there own gear. They’ve got philosophies on what color of fishing flies work best and when. They’ve got theories about how different fishing flies are likely to work with different fish.

These fishing flies have names like “Adult Damsel,” “Sucking Leech,” “Rusty Rat,” “Scuds,” and “Bombers.” If you were pulled over for speeding with a list like this in your car, you may be taken in for further questioning. When it comes to fishing flies, it’s best just to let the fisherman enjoy going shopping with a gift certificate.

    Vests and Hip Packs
A fisherman’s got to have somewhere to keep all of those fishing flies, sinkers, floats, and gadgets while fishing for hours. That’s why vests and hip packs make such great gifts. A fisherman usually has one already. A lot of times it’s 20 or 30 years old and definitely seen better days. But since it’s still “functional” it’s one of those things that they want to replace, but never justify doing. A great gift is one that someone really wants, but is too practical to buy for him or herself. Sneak a look at your fisherman’s vest pack. If it’s old, tattered and faded, replacing it with a fresh new pack with lots of zippers and pockets for fishing flies is certain to be a big hit.

    Fishing DVD’s
If there’s one thing fishermen have in common, it’s that they can’t seem to get enough info about fishing. Whether it’s sharing fishing stories, discussing their preference of fishing flies, or watching fishing shows on cable, they’re almost always thinking about fishing and how they can improve their strategy and bring home a bigger fish than last time. What do fishermen want? They want more fishing ideas! There are quite a few DVD available about fly fishing topics like tying fishing flies, fly casting, water entomology as it relates to fishing, and plenty more.

So before you go out and purchase the infamous singing bass wall plaque out of desperation for great ideas, take this list and do some online shopping for some gifts that are sure to please. This bit of research gave me some great ideas for gifts for my dad and hopefully will help you give the fisherman in your life a smile this holiday season.

  • Popular Motorcycle Apparel And Gear Guide

Finding the right motorcycle apparel at a discount price has been made so much easier since the emergence of online motorcycle stores. Now you can shop for riding gear in the comfort of your own home. Never before could you hit 20 or 30 different stores and compare prices on apparel, but now with the invention of the internet its only a matter of minutes to find the best price on riding apparel or any other bits you want for your ride. Also the convenience of never having to leave your house and having all your gear delivered to your front door is a nice bonus.

In today’s market for motorcycle apparel and gear you have a plethora of choices as to what you want to wear. There are almost as many makers of quality apparel as there are when you just go clothes shopping. Some of today’s most popular gear is made by Icon. Icon really has its pulse on the market place, they are always pushing the envelope when it comes to design and style. Icon makes pretty much all the gear you could possibly want, jackets, gloves, boots, helmets, and even tank bags. They are probably the most searched for manufacturer of motorcycle gear on the web. One of the newer lines for motorcycle apparel is Arlen Ness. Now Arlen Ness or Ness Tech has made parts for cruiser bikes forever but has recently also decided to enter the apparel market with some really nice looking jackets. Arlen Ness gear is made to appeal more to the cruiser rider where most of the other companies mentioned here are geared towards the sport riding crowd. AGVSport is another well known line, they much like Icon make it all. You can get anything from a jacket to gloves and boots from AGV. AGV Sport makes very high quality gear. Alpinestars is another popular maker of motorcycle apparel. They manufacture helmets, gloves, boots, jackets and even one piece or two piece riding suits. The one piece suits really are more designed to be for track days, offering the best in protection that money can buy. For those of you that enjoy cruising more then sport riding you will find lots of chaps, vests and old school leather jackets are available by a variety of manufacturers as well as their being a lot of generic gear of that type being available.

Back in the early biker days if you wanted a jacket you were pretty much stuck sweating it out in a leather jacket even when it was steaming outside. Now you can get mesh jackets that offer as much protection as their leather counterparts. The introduction of mesh jackets was a dream come true for anyone that lives in extremely warm climates. Also many of the gloves now come in a vented format which makes them perfect for warm weather riding. Gloves are now also being made out mesh material to make them even lighter and even more breathable therefore allowing your hands to stay cooler while still offering some protection. Sorry boots are usually still leather and can get quite warm, however in the last few years Icon and a few other manufacturers of apparel have come out with riding shoes which offer some of the same protection as boots but are way more comfortable. Alpinestars makes some really nice ones that double as regular tennis shoes just fine.

If you are in the market for quality motorcycle apparel at a discount I would definitely recommend you hit the internet and shop to your hearts content. With so many makers and sites out there take your time and find the gear that you really want.

  • Cheap Backpacking – a How to Guide

Cheap backpacking is accomplished in two basic ways? The first is to cut the cost of the trip. The second way is to spend less on the gear you buy. Here are some tips for doing both of these.

    Cheap Backpacking Gear

Don’t bother with high-tech gear. Is it really important to have a super wicking poly-fiber t-shirt for when you’re hiking? Probably not, especially if it is the middle of July. Any regular t-shirt bought on sale for a few dollars will work. For that matter, a cheap plastic emergency poncho can replace that $200 breathable/waterproof rain suit if rain is unlikely and it’s warm out there. You might want to spend the money for better gear if you want lighter versions. In that case, you can still save money by putting the next two tips to use.

Look for the deals. An obvious tip, but easy to forget when you get excited about that shiny new equipment. Shoes and hiking boots in particular can be bought inexpensively if you watch for the sales. Apparently some people won’t buy last year’s styles, so those $90 shoes go on sale for $40. Look for the closeouts from online vendors and local shoe stores. Thought outdoor clothing is most likely to go on sale, tents, sleeping bags are sometimes half-priced when newer models come out.

Look for used gear. Though I would never buy used shoes, I’ve found that thrift stores have plenty of used jackets that are in great condition. I’ve even found decent lightweight hiking pants at times, as well as aluminum pans that are really light and some other backpacking equipment.

Make your own gear. I know of backpackers who sew their own backpacks and sleeping bags. That seems like too much work to me, and I’m not sure the savings would amount to much. But I have modified cheap pans for backpacking, made hats from old thermal shirt sleeves, and bivy sacks from plastic and duct tape. And now that I think about it, I did make a backpack once from an old aluminum frame and a duffel bag. It weighed less than any commercial frame pack for sale at the time.

Skip the expensive foods. You don’t need freeze-dried meals to enjoy backpacking. Snacks are a good way to go, and if you really need those cooked meals, bring simple foods like instant rice.

    Cheap Backpacking Trips

Plan your own backpacking excursions. Although guided hiking trips can be nice, they are expensive. Just plan your own. Choose a location, do your research online, and start looking for the cheapest plane tickets that will get you there.

Go to free places. Many people automatically think of national parks or other places that have fees when they think of a wilderness experience. But there are many places that are just as beautiful and don’t charge anything. Try national forests with hiking trails, for example, or BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land, or state forests. One advantage of this approach – apart from the money savings – is that you’ll likely find such area less crowded.

Find a location nearby. For many backpacking trips the cost of getting to the trailhead is the biggest expense. Isn’t there someplace interesting to see within an hour or two of where you are? Visit those areas and you might save a lot of travel money.

Now put it all together. Plan your own trip to a free place close to home and outfit yourself with basic clothing bought at thrift stores and equipment bought on sale. That’s cheap backpacking.

  • A Guide For Music Gear Repair

Music gear is not only expensive to buy but also expensive to maintain. A full maintaince job can lead to the restoration of the gear. The first step in music gear repair lies in identifying the area of discrepancy. If you are not aware of the area you can land up in trouble by probably spoiling the gear.

Music gear is sensitive to even slight changes in the weather. It is always advisable to keep the gear in a protective environment. When not in use try to keep it wrapped inside a box with moisture absorbents. If the humidity or the moisture content in the air affects the gear, the sound quality may start distorting or sometimes even disturbing the entire signal flow.

Various gears are found faulty due to various reasons. Thus, it is necessary to know the reason for the fault. While repairing keep a note of the power related issue. Repairs and upgrades to the power supply and attention to power and ground distribution can reduce power-related noise without significantly altering desirable sonic characteristics.

For music gear like keyboards and synthesizers, the musician can face problems like low-output after sometime or power failure. But with an instrument like a guitar whether acoustic or electric repairing can really be a long task. However, the trick lies in identifying the area that needs repair.

If you are dealing with a guitar you can start with the guitar neck. That is because the guitar neck over time will warp because of the constant string tension. If your guitar has become harder to fret it may be a sign the neck needs adjustment. To check for warping remove the guitar strings from the bridge, not the tuning keys, this way you can put them back on without restringing. To be sure take a yardstick and lay it edgewise across the neck. It should lie evenly across the frets. If not, then the neck needs adjustment. To adjust your guitar neck you need to tighten the truss rod by turning the nut clockwise. However, do not over tighten it as you can break the neck. After all, we are trying to avoid costly repairs not create them.

Secondly, you will often hear a “buzz” in your guitar caused by loose frets. To check for loose frets press the ends of each fret with the tip of your finger to check for movement. To repair loose frets, first determine which end is loose. Place your guitar on its side and hold down the loose fret. Use one drop of super glue or similar product and let it run down between the fret and the fingerboard holding the fret down while it dries. Again, this is not a hard procedure but if you are careless you will cause more damage than what you had to begin with. Be very careful while performing this adjustment. If you raise the string height too much you may change the intonation of your gear. If the string is to low it will cause a fret buzz.

More fuel efficient and environmentally friendly outboards are coming on to the market all the time. Honda has taken a very successful engine, the BF50, and put it through an environmental make-over. They wanted a lighter unit, better mid-range efficiency and a throttle second to none when opened at the top end.

Honda has taken a very successful engine, the BF50, and put it through an environmental make-over. They wanted a lighter unit, better mid-range efficiency and a throttle second to none when opened at the top end.

BLAST Honda’s research and development experts took the proven 3-cylinder 808cc (49.3cu in) block, and tweaked it with a combination of lighter components and sophisticated software. The Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST) software programmed is designed to eke out the fuel without compromising performance. It uses an oxygen sensor to enrich the fuel mixture to get the boat on the plane, and then makes it leaner again when you’re settled at cruising speed – which is where these types of engines spend most of their time. Combining with BLAST is EcoMo, an engine management system using complex electronics with which Honda hopes to save 22% of fuel compared to the earlier BF50 model.

Streamlining The lower gear assembly is much thinner so as to minimise drag, although the gear ratios and the prop size remain unchanged. There is a modified anti-cavitation plate, designed to ease the flow of water past the leg, and lightweight plastic manifolds have been used to help make the BF50 the lightest in its class. It ranges from 205lb through to 215lb depending on the configuration.

Sitting on top of the machine is a beast of an alternator, mainly as a response to American demands. Fishfinders and beer chillers are very popular with American fishermen, and with 44 million boat-anglers in the United States manufacturers want to supply enough electrical power to keep them happy. Using a bi-polar system has a larger-coil, the alternator pumps out 17A, getting on for twice as many and its predecessor.

On the water The BF50, and its detuned sister the BF40 (same engine, lower spec for European tax reasons) can be supplied either tiller-or wheel steered. On the tiller version the handles are centred, and have been made longer, with all the control falling easily to the fingers. Friction locks prevent throttle slippage, and there are two shaft lengths available on the BF50 of 20 or 25 inches.

Weight savings The engine is slightly noisier than other similar 4-strokes when opened up. This may be as a result of making weight savings in some components. Density does dampen noise, but it’s a small price to pay for a potential saving of a fifth of your fuel bill every season. The offset crankshaft leading to compact size allows the engine to suit most powerboats in the 14 to 20 foot size range, and is especially suited to open dories and small RIBs. Being a 4-stroke, it can happily idle away all day, so would also be well suited to larger rivercraft.

The future of outboards Honda seem to be keen to address environmental issues, with an engine that easily meets the California Air Resources Board 2008 emissions regulations (the world’s strictest). And should you wish to dispose of your BF50, it’s 93.6% recyclable.

  • A Visitors Guide to Stockholm Sweden

Stockholm is one of the most progressive cities in the world, and nowhere is this reflected more than in its social policy. Citizens are provided with housing, health care, and educational opportunities, all of which makes for happy, productive people. While taxes may be high, the money they generate is used to create a high quality of life, which makes Stockholm extremely appealing to the many hopeful immigrants that flock there each year. You don’t need to move all the way to Sweden to make the most of what Stockholm has to offer; a simple trip will also allow you to experience this utterly unique metropolis.

The weather in Stockholm definitely reflects the seasons, from snowy winters to balmy summers. Spring brings the heaviest flow of tourists to the city, so you might want to wait until summer or fall to visit. Summer, naturally, brings the warmest weather of the year, with temperatures starting at 68 degrees. Fall is considerably cooler, when temperatures range from 41 to 64 degrees. Both of these seasons also include the benefits of fewer people and lower lodging prices, two definite musts for the smart and thrifty traveler.

European travel can be pricey, but in a city known for its fantastic design sense, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to stay somewhere stylish. Travel + Leisure Magazine sites Hotel Rival (Mariatorget 3, S-118 91 Stockholm) as one of Stockholm’s best hotels. This boutique hotel-owned by former ABBA member Benny Andersson-features 99 beautifully decorated rooms (which start at less than $200 a night for a double), each with 32″ plasma screen TVs, CD/DVD players, and wireless internet access. Other amenities include a bar, bistro, caf, and a bakery known for serving up the best bread in the city.

There is much to see and do in Stockholm, including over 100 museums and a wide array of dining and shopping options. One convenient way to experience many of these entertaining possibilities is by purchasing a Stockholm Card online ahead of time. A one-day pass costs about $38 (a two-day pass runs around $59, a three-day pass, $75), and with it you gain admission to 75 of the city’s top tourist attractions and unlimited access to its excellent public transportation system, as well as special deals from local shops and restaurants. You can arrange to have your pass mailed to you, or you may pick them up at the Stockholm Tourist Centre (located at Sverigehuset, Hamngatan 27).

Stockholm’s many museums target different audiences. There are some specifically geared toward children (such as the International Child Art Museum, located at Vrby All 14 , 143 03 Vrby), while others cater to niche interests, like maritime navigation (such as the Vasa Museum, Galrvarvsvgen 14, 102 52 Stockholm). Keep in mind that museums worldwide are closed on Mondays for maintenance, so make sure to schedule the start date of your Stockholm Card for another day. Each museum includes a permanent collection, as well as special visiting exhibits. There are also many dining choices for tourists, featuring cuisine from all corners of the globe, including Asia, the Middle East, and the rest of Europe. Shopping options are no less diverse, and visitors are sure to find that Swedish design extends to far more than just home dcor (a la IKEA). Make sure to check out Gamla Stan-an older region of Stockholm-for all your handmade gift needs.

  • The Time-efficient Guide to Buying Snowboarding Gear

If you’re eager to hit the slopes as soon as possible and finally learn how to snowboard like a pro but still lack the essential snowboarding gear and equipment to get started on your hobby, here’s a quick shopping list so you can purchase everything you need from the shop in the shortest time possible!

A List of Snowboarding Gear and Equipment for Beginners

Snowboard – Let’s start with the most obvious requirement in snowboard gear. Your choice of snowboard will determine the quality of performance you’ll expect from yourself and from the snowboard itself. Your choice will also determine the level of agility and speed you’ll enjoy when you’re snowboarding.

There are three primary types of snowboards. Freestyle snowboards are short and most suitable for novice snowboarders such as yourself not only because of their size but for its flexibility as well. You’ll be able to control freestyle snowboards more easily than other types of boards.

The second type is known as freeride snowboards. These are best for snowboarders who are one or a few levels beyond the novice stage but can in no way refer to themselves as experts…for the time being. Freeride snowboards, incidentally, are arguably the most popular type of snowboard as it allows people to gauge their snowboarding skills and explore their talents without putting themselves in too much danger.

The last type is called alpine snowboards. Whereas freestyle snowboards are known for its flexibility, alpine snowboards are known for its rigid build. They are great for players with highly advanced snowboarding skills and enjoy the thrills of going downhill in incredible speed. This is also the right type of board to use if you wish to make perfect turns and curves.

Snowboard Bindings – Although they may appear flimsy and useless, snowboard bindings in fact play a significant role in keeping snowboarders safe while practicing their favorite sport. There are several types of snowboard bindings for you to choose from: strapped, flow-ins, plated, step-ins, and those without base (baseless).

Snowboarding Boots – Another equally overlooked factor when it comes to increasing the level of safety and protection that a snowboarder enjoys while he’s making all sorts of turns and jumps in the slopes are snowboarding boots. Besides offering comfort and warmth to your feet, they also prevent this area – which includes the ankles – from physical injury, or at least reduce the risk of encountering it. Again, there are several types of snowboarding boots that you can choose from – hard boots, soft boots, and those that mix the features of both. When purchasing snowboarding boots, make sure that you purchase those which are durable and you feel comfortable wearing for long periods of time.

Snowboarding Outfit – Just like boots, the right snowboarding outfit will keep you safe and secure from physical harm. It will also keep you warm and lessen the risks of getting affected by hypothermia or frostbite. When shopping for snowboarding apparel, important factors to consider are comfort, quality, and durability or protection against all the natural elements that it will be sure to be exposed to!

Snowboarding Goggles – Lastly, contrary to popular belief, snowboarding goggles are not used for aesthetic purposes only. Rather, they are worn by snowboarders to improve their sense of sight. It’s important to see very clearly where you’re going because there are a lot of dangers that you’ll encounter when you’re snowboarding.
